Bulbs are amazing botanicals. Like pods or seeds, they contain everything they need to flourish, packed tight in their papery skins. All that’s required is soil, some rain and a hand to plant it. Then, when it’s good and ready, out bursts petals, a stem and the necessary parts to propagate.
In many people’s mind, Madonna lily is queen of the lilies. It has burst its bulb with a showy flash of white for some 3,000 years, much to the delight of the ancient Greeks and Romans. A symbol of purity thanks to its pristine hue, this lily is married in many minds to the Virgin Mary, from whom it gained its common name.
Likely a native of what is now Turkey and Afghanistan, the lily spread west with the trade winds to Central Europe. It’s been said that no proper English garden lacks a Madonna lily.
Madonna lily makes a star appearance in our latest collection, Temple Tree Jasmine. In addition to its sweet essential oil, obtained through its trumpet-shaped flowers, this bulb is a rich source of purifying, protective and moisturizing benefits.
In ancient Egypt, doctors pulverized the bulb into a poultice to cure “female disorders.” Compresses made with lily were applied topically to ease inflammation, tumors and burns. Lily oil also cooled burns and relieved earaches. Lily petals crushed and mixed with honey are used to soften the skin and help reduce lines and wrinkles. Its extracts help to preserve the skin’s moisture balance.
In Temple Tree Jasmine, soothing Madonna lily extract combines with velvety Monoi butter to indulge the skin with nourishing moisture. Floral wisps layer the air with heady Temple Tree blossoms and jasmine sambac, entwined with honeysuckle, ylang ylang and damask rose and steeped in silky coconut milk. Available in formulas for bath and body care and home fragrance, the exotic bouquet benefits both body and mind.
