Eucalyptus: Love at First Smell
When she stopped by her neighborhood gift shop at age 14, Emily Miller didn’t know she was about to embark on a lifelong love affair. There, she sampled Eucalyptus by Thymes, she recalls, “and I’ve loved it ever since.”
As fresh and energetic as the fragrance itself, the Minnesotan with auburn tresses and a complexion as luminous as a Renaissance portrait places Eucalyptus central to the most significant moments of her life.
“When you find a fragrance that you like, that really is you, it’s hard to get rid of it,” she says. “It was the fragrance I wore on my wedding day. It’s the fragrance I took to the hospital when my son was born. I wore it to my senior prom.”
Many people like Emily find certain fragrances so compelling, they become like old friends: dependable, familiar, gently encouraging. Eucalyptus, one of Thymes’ first fragrances, has an intriguing appeal with origins to match. Indeed, for many Thymes fans it has served as an initial introduction to the rest of our fragrances.
“It’s been a part of me so long, I can’t imagine living without it.”

Nearly 30 years ago, the fragrance literally bloomed in a backyard experiment under the hands of the company’s two founders, who were childhood friends. Sitting at a picnic table, they immersed their fragrance oil blend in a bath of warm water and hovered, curious to find out what would result.
Intricate layers of crisp eucalyptus, bright citrus, green florals and herbaceous woods emerged and unraveled. The creators scooped the air toward their noses, breathing in the bright scent. They knew instantly that they had discovered a fragrance of uncommon character.
“It was an instant 'aha!' moment, a scent so unexpectedly fresh and compelling," recalls Stephanie Shopa, Thymes co-founder and CEO. "Eucalyptus was unlike any other fragrance we had ever experienced, and we couldn't wait to share it with others.”
Eucalyptus has been one of the most popular collections ever since. And its connection to consumers remains a powerful one. As Emily says, “It’s been a part of me so long, I can’t imagine living without it.” Find out more about Thymes Eucalyptus collection.
